Inside the Lazy Kitchen:
You might be wondering why a dietitian is writing about a treadmill.
Fair question.
Oddly enough, this story has more to do with my kitchen than my treadmill.
I’ve never enjoyed going to the gym. More accurately, I’ve never enjoyed everything around the workout. So I saved the money from a gym membership and gradually built a home gym instead. That treadmill has been part of my life for well over a decade.
Exercise itself isn’t exciting to me. Truthfully, I don’t enjoy exercising enough to rely on willpower. So I learned to pair it with something I enjoyed—listening to something interesting or watching something.
Later, as I started building Delicious Lazy Nutrition, my workouts naturally turned into brainstorming sessions. Many early DLN ideas were sketched out on my iPad while on the elliptical.
Before long, the ideas got bigger than an iPad screen. I wanted to spend more time writing and designing, and the laptop became necessary.
I decided to turn my treadmill into a walking desk by laying a surface across it.
Being a gadget person, my first instinct was to buy something.
I measured the treadmill and hunted down a narrow console table that was just right. Long enough for the treadmill, shallow enough to still walk. It even had built-in power outlets.
I thought I’d found the perfect solution.
I ordered it, and here’s the funny part: I never planned to assemble it into a table. My plan was to take the top out of the box, lay it across the treadmill, and ignore the rest.
Then my husband reminded me we already owned something: the extension leaf from our formal dining table.
I have to admit, I was a little disappointed.
The console table was sleek.
The dining table leaf was… chunky.
But we tried it.
It fit almost perfectly.
The console table went back.
My walking desk cost $0.
Looking back, this isn’t really a story about a walking desk.
It’s a reminder that I don’t try to force myself into better habits—I redesign the environment so the better choice is the easier one.
That’s the same idea behind Delicious Lazy Nutrition: redesign the environment so the healthy choice becomes the easy choice.
Apparently, the Lazy Kitchen was never just about the kitchen.
